EFF say the Speaker is biased

Members of the EFF were forcefully removed from the Govan Mbeki Council Chambers.

SECUNDA – The Economic Freedom Fighters accused Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, speaker of the Govan Mbeki Municipal Council, of being biased and ignoring standing orders.

This came after the party was again chased out of the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Council Chambers on Tuesday, 28 February for not adhering to the dress code.

Mr Zuma said according to Standing Orders A1102 2013 on the Code of Conduct and Removal of members: “34.1: If a member refuses to comply with a direction in terms of Section 33, the speaker may direct the municipal manager to remove the member or to cause his/her removal and take steps to prevent his/her return to the meeting.

“34.2: If a member at subsequent meetings persists in the willful disregard of the authority of the speaker and or the wilfull obstruction of the business of the council, the council may exclude such a member from meetings for a period as it may be determined but not exceeding 60 days.”

The speaker then ordered the municipal manager to remove the EFF members from the chamber.

The EFF members refused to leave and things turned ugly and physical as the EFF members were resisting and the municipal police and security personnel eventually managed to forcefully remove them from the chamber.

Mr Anthony Mkhwanazi, EFF councillor, said being chased out of the chamber was unconstitutional and a breach of the law.

“These actions seek to discriminate against us and to exclude us from debating critical issues such as budget adjustments.

“The Constitution allows freedom of expression.”

“The council took a resolution that this rule regarding wearing ties must be referred to the rules committee, but they keep postponing the rules committee meeting.”

The DA was also not happy with the manner in which the matter was handled by the speaker.

Mr Encee van Huyssteen, DA councillor, said: “The ANC has once again chosen to enforce the standing orders at Govan Mbeki Municipal Council meetings.

“The EFF were forcefully and violently removed from council due to the interpretation of standing orders regarding the dress code.

“This is while the speaker specifically chose to allow his ANC cadres to transgress the dress code, simultaneously choosing to evict the EFF.”

The EFF vowed to take on the municipality regarding the budget adjustment.
