Tax season 2016/2017 is open, are you registered?

As per usual people queue outside the Sars offices to submit their tax returns.

The annual tax season is open since 1 July and it manifests in lines queuing at the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

You do not need to submit a return:

• If you earn under R350 000 for a full year from one employer, being your total salary income before tax.

• Have no other sources of additional income for example interest or rental income and no deductions that you want to claim for example medical expenses, travel or retirement annuities.

If you are still unsure whether you are registered or not, ask your employer or call the SARS contact centre at 0800 00 7277 or visit your nearest SARS branch. As a registered taxpayer you can sign-up to use the SARS eFiling service which allows you not only to file a return, make payments to SARS or request a tax clearance certificate, but also gives you access to many other benefits via an electronic platform.

To register as an eFiler visit the SARS eFiling website www.sarsefiling.co.za and click on register. It should only take you five to 10 minutes to go through the six-step process.
