King Mahlangu shot and killed in Middelburg for a cell phone

Mr King Mahlangu addressed the community recently.

The family of Mr King Mahlangu is in shock after his murder.

Mr Mahlangu, an activist, a former Sanco leader and the general secretary of the Sakhisizwe Progressive Movement, was shot and killed on Tuesday, 29 August in Middelburg.

His family said Mr Mahlangu was on his way from a Practical Radical Economic Transformation (Pret) launch in Nkomazi when he was murdered.

It is reported that he died on the scene and that only his cell phone was stolen.

Mr Xolani Mahlangu said his brother did not use his car to go to the launch, but was taken by his comrades.

“We were told they were however not returning to the Bethal area, and Mr Mahlangu had to hitch-hike.

“It is alleged that when he was shot, he was calling someone to come pick him up in Middelburg.

“The person who told us about the tragedy, said he was on his phone when somebody else suddenly spoke on that phone and then there were gunshots.”

Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, president of Sapromo, said Mr Mahlangu was a true revolutionary, a dedicated cadre of the movement and the most diligent member of the society.

“We have lost a visionary, a leader and a servant of the people.

“We are crippled by his passing and it will take time to recover from his loss.

“We will never forget King and will continue to fight the economic struggle he introduced to the movement before he was assassinated.

“We will never forget his kindness. May God give him eternal rest and the family the strength to bear their great pain.”

Mr Sunday Mathebula, secretary general of Pret, said the organisation was saddened by the death of Mr Mahlangu and that they are working closely with the family to arrange his funeral.

The date of and venue for the funeral were not known at time of going to press.
