[WATCH] Current situation at Bethal dumping site

Bethal dumping site

Update – 9 November
The Bethal dumping site is still closed due to non payment to the contractor.

Four payments behind, two made yesterday.

The contractor is adamant that site will remain closed until all payments are up-to-date.

No refuse removal will take place for the day.

HOD will work on a “catch up” plan once they have access to the dumping site again.

According to DA Councillor, Marietjie Fourie there will be no refuse removal in Bethal until further notice.

This is due to security reasons at the Bethal dumping site.

Cllr Fourie told the Ridge Times in a telephonic interview on Tuesday, 7 November that the service provider who has been contracted by the Govan Mbeki Municipality to manage the Bethal dumping site, has apparently not been paid for its services the last three months.

Cllr Fourie also alleged that the municipal refuse removal trucks have been dumping residents waste illegally in an open field outside Bethal.

The refuse removal trucks apparently resorted to this ‘solution’ after the disgruntled service provider, who manages the dumping site in town, “closed” the site by dumping ground on the access road to the dump site  to prevent anyone from entering the grounds.

The Ridge Times contacted the acting municipal manager, Mr Thisha Mhlanga for comment. Mr Mhlanga said at about 3pm that he is in an urgent meeting that will continue until 6pm. He asked that the reporter phone him back and promised to provide comment.

The Ridge Times phoned Mr Mhlanga a total of four times without success to get comment.
