The police, members of the CPF and Govan Mbeki Municipality took hands and removed illegal squatters in Secunda and Trichardt last week.

An old man was living under a tree in an illegal structure that he built in the open field next to a pathology laboratory in Trichardt.

“The structure had to be removed and the man had to find an alternative place to live,” said Mr Sipho Mlotshwa from the Department of Community Services of the municipality.

The authorities removed the structure and found a room for the man to stay in.

An employee of the laboratory said: “The old man did not really bother us, but this open field is a drug haven.

“We see drug dealers and their clients here every day.”

“We will have meetings with the police and other municipal departments to address the drug problems,” said Mr Mlotshwa.

The authorities also destroyed illegal structures and belongings of illegal squatters living next to the river in Trichardt.

“We gave them notice a long time ago and gave them ample time to remove their belongings,” said Mr Clarke van der Walt, chairman of the CPF in Trichardt.
