Refuse piling up in the greater Govan Mbeki Municipality is becoming a health hazard

A woman dumped her rubbish under the bridge near the Evander dumping site last Thursday.

Towns in the Govan Mbeki Municipality are filled to the brim with black rubbish bags as municipal refuse removal is almost non-existent.

Financial constraints and a shortage of vehicles in the refuse removal fleet are the main causes for the lack in this service.

In Secunda and Evander, residential refuse has been piling up for weeks because there is apparently only one refuse removal truck in the Secunda area that is working.

According to Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, DA councillor, the other truck went in for tyre repairs.

She said no trucks were operating over the weekend and that things will not get better.

Ms Chamberlain suggested that residents begin with plan B for refuse removal and remove their own refuse or make other arrangements.
