DA says author of bankruptcy in GMM is now the mayor

HIGHVELD – The DA’s chief whip, Mr Thulani Maseko, said on Monday, 5 March the author of the bankruptcy of Govan Mbeki Municipality is now the executive mayor and that it is a disgrace.

This came after Ms Thandi Nxonono was appointed as the new executive mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality after Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman’s resignation.

Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman.

In her resignation letter, Ms Maboa-Boltman said the reason for her resignation was that the African National Congress decided to redeploy her somewhere else.

She said she had pledged her commitment and loyalty to the Govan Mbeki Municipality and its people.

Ms Maboa-Boltman also said she tried everything in her power to bring stability in the municipality.

Soon after that, the Speaker, Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, announced that nominations and and election were going to take place.

However Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, leader of the Saskhisizwe Progressive Movement, called for a point of order and told Mr Zuma that he was out of order and that he was acting unconstitutional to proceed with the nominations and election.

“We were expecting a report from the executive mayor, not her resignation. What is the IEC doing here? We don’t know anything and this was not legislated. The standing order states clearly that when a mayor is removed, those who want to do so must do so prior to a meeting.”

Mr Zuma instructed Mr Hlolweni to sit down, however he refused and sang a revolutionary song, “Yimbi lendawo” (This place is too bad), and members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) joined him.

Mr Zuma instructed the municipal manager, Mr Thisha Mhlanga, to instruct law enforcers to remove Mr Hlolweni.

The EFF joined Mr Hlolweni and walked out of the Chamber.

Mr Humphrey Dube of the EFF said: “The meeting was supposed to be held according to the agenda and we came here expecting the motion to be tabled, but when we got here, it is a different story.

“This meeting is illegal. They can’t use the majority to push their illegal agenda. We are tired of this and it is time that the opposition is standing up for what is right.

“The ANC is using a mafia style to run the municipality, but in actual fact it is not a municipality but a mafia house.”

The proceedings continued and the nominations began.

Mr Dan Nhlapho, ANC, nominated Ms Thandi Nxonono, MMC for Finance, to be the executive mayor and was seconded by Ms Thandi Jiyane of the ANC.

Ms Nxonono accepted the nomination and it was not contested. She was immediately declared the mayor.

The DA objected and asked how Ms Nxonono can be the mayor after she had failed as an MMC.

Mr Maseko said: “Ms Nxonono has failed dismally as the MMC for Finance to revive the state of the municipality, how is she expected to do well as a mayor?

“This appointment will be the downfall of the municipality. This has nothing to do with public interest, but with the interest of the ANC.

“We were ambushed today. When we were called for the meeting, we were told there was going to be an extra-ordinary meeting and that a motion would be tabled.

“However, when we got here, things were different and the IEC was ready to do their job.”

The DA left the meeting when Ms Nxonono began her acceptance speech.

She began by acknowledging the hard work done by the former executive mayor and that she will continue where she had ended.

She further announced her mayoral committee.

“I will continue in the Department of Finance until I have appointed a new MMC.

“In the cooperative portfolio, I appoint Ms Betty Ndaba. In the technical service, the MMC will be Mr Dan Nhlapho. For community services I appoint Mr Anthony Makhaye, for Special Projects Mr Sakhile Mahlangu and for Planning and Development I appoint Ms Ethel Nkosi.”
