House burglaries are becoming a serious concern in Evander

EVANDER – House burglaries are becoming a serious concern and Evander Police Station is swamped with burglary and theft cases.

Criminals are stealing home appliances such as televisions, computers, microwaves and cell phones.

Capt Mishack Mhlanga, Evander Police’s acting station commander, said: “These acts also contribute to the rise in people being arrested for possession of stolen goods.

“Communities should start neighbourhood watches and community policing forums, because the police cannot fight this wave of crime alone, but when we work together we can prosper.”

Evander Police cautioned the public about leaving their houses unattended during the holidays.

“If home owners are going away, they must ensure that they get someone to look after their property.

“When the house is left unattended, it provides criminals with the opportunity to break into the house and leave with belongings uninterrupted,” said Capt Mhlanga.

Police appealed to residents to know the crime prevention measures during the day and night.

The following tips will help prevent or limit house burglaries and theft:

* Do not leave outside lights on the whole day.

* Avoid leaving the gate or garage doors opened.

* Do not leave your tools or valuables within easy reach of the prospective burglar.

* Know all your emergency numbers.

* Never leave keys in the locks or in the door.

* Curtains should be closed after dark.

* Inform the police of suspicious people who you consider pose a threat.
