Operation One Rand One Can: Feed a person, save an animal

SECUNDA – Join the quest to alleviate the suffering in this community by donating a mere R1 and a tin of food.

Suffering and need can be seen in the community – from hungry kids to the Highveld Ridge SPCA facing closure.

The Echo/Ridge has therefore again launched our Operation One Rand One Can through which we ask people to donate only R1 and a can of non-perishable food per people.

We are asking schools and corporations to become involved and challenge their peers to collect and donate as much as possible to this cause.

A half page advertisement in the Echo worth R10 000 will be given to the school, as well as the business that collected the most money and tins of food.

The cut off date for the schools is the end of the term on 22 June. The cut off date for businesses is 30 June.

Donations may be brought in to our offices at the Driefontein Mall Shopping Centre on the corner of Nelson Mandela Drive and Pieter Wenning Street, or the newspaper can be called for collection.

Food stocks are depleted at local welfare organisations, such as Rata that now has to turn away hungry people because there is no more food to make up food parcels for needy families.

Ms Sonja Smit from Rata said last week she cried when she could not give a little boy food recently.

Rata is one of several organisations that give out food parcels to families in need.

Ms Smit said poverty is increasing in families. This is becoming more evident, even in families where there is a breadwinner.

“The monthly income is just enough to cover the rent, but not enough to buy food. Times are really tough.”

Other organisations, such as Secunda Angels, often provide meals and food parcels to needy families and senior citizens.

There is also always a need for food at places of safety, such as Janelle Huis in Evander and the Kosmos Children’s Haven in Kriel.

Then there is the Highveld Ridge SPCA that is in dire need of finances or they will have to close their doors for good.

If they close down, there will be no more animal cruelty investigations, no more help for suffering animals throughout a vast area that covers Kriel and its rural areas from Secunda and eMbalenhle to Standerton and even farming communities in the Vrede district past Standerton.

The Highveld Ridge SPCA has saved from horses and starving cattle to seagulls and lion cubs in the past. Numerous animal abusers have been brought to book because of these people’s fearless stance to oppose cruelty against animals.

After the word was shared that the SPCA only has a month left before it will be forced to close its doors, they have received lots of animal food. Animal lovers from Secunda and Evander stood together and donated pet food to the SPCA on Tuesday, 29 May.

More than 500kg dog food and 150kg cat food had been collected.

Mr Willie Wentzel, Secunda resident, also visited the Echo/Ridge’s offices on Tuesday with a R100 donation towards the SPCA. He is challenging other residents to also donate R100. The SPCA bank account is Absa bank, code 509-243, account number 103 167 0922.

Operation One Rand One Can is a strategy for immediate alleviation of need among welfare organisations and the SPCA. It does not however, solve the existing problem.

A permanent solution needs to be identified, such as donations in the form of monthly debit orders.
