More than 100 runners of the Govan Mbeki municipal area take on the Comrades

Wiehan van der Berg, a Secunda resident who runs under the banner of the Boksburg Marathon Club, is officially the fastest local runner of this year’s Comrades Marathon.

He finished the 90km distance between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday, 10 June in just over seven hours, earning him a silver medal.

Van der Berg (33) said he really had a good race and improved his time of last year by 11 minutes to end this year on 7:03,36. This was his seventh Comrades and he aims to run under seven hours next year.

Dirk van den Heever of Secunda Marathon Club obtained a Bill Rowan medal.

“There is no secret to the success. It is plain hard work and training and sticking to the plan. You have to condition your mind when your body wants to give up.”

Van der Berg initially supported his brother, Werner, a Comrades runner. “Eventually I decided to do it as well.”

Monyane Chabedi from the Evander Gold Mines Athletics Club appears to be second fastest among the more than 100 runners from Govan Mbeki municipal area.

Chabedi finished the 90,184km distance in a time of 7:12,59. This earned him a well-deserved silver medal.

Secunda Marathon Club’s Collin Louw missed a silver medal by a mere eight minutes. He finished in a time of 7:38,23 and was awarded a Bill Rowan medal.
