Help clean and fix up Secunda’s cemetery

AfriForum wants to repair this building at the cemetery in Secunda so that it can be used again.

SECUNDA – AfriForum is calling on all residents in the Govan Mbeki municipal area to help with cleaning and repairing the cemetery in Secunda.

The facilities are in a mess. Mr Jan du Plesssis from AfriForum said the ablution facilities are broken, filthy and unhygienic.

“Most of the copper tubing has been stolen, all electrical wiring, db boards, wall plugs, light switches, light fittings and the geyser have been broken out and stolen.”

He said the alarm system has also been removed.

According to Mr Du Plessis, AfriForum wants to get the facilities back in working order and the cemetery clean and safe for use at funerals and also when residents want to visit the graves of their loved ones.

“Maintaining the facilities will have to be an on-going process.

“Once everything has been restored we can use the facility at a small donation towards the maintenance.”

Mr Du Plessis said the following needs to be done:

1. Rewiring of the whole facility must be done.

2. Safety gates and burglar proofing needs to be fitted and repaired.

3. Ablution facilities must be repaired and in working order.

4. The entire facility must be repainted and cleaned.

5. Ceilings have to be replaced.

6. A new electrical geyser or solar geyser must be installed.

7. Tables and chairs will be needed to be used at funerals

8. Gazebos to be available at a small donation for ceremonies

9. Dustbins need to be emptied on a regular basis

10. Shrubs must be pruned and maintained

“We believe that once the building at the cemetery is refurbished, that it can then be used as a chapel available to anyone who is willing to make a small donation towards the maintenance thereof.

“We ask for donations as well as your time and your labour to get the place back on track.

Come join us at the cemetery at 8am on Saturday, 4 August to kick off this project,” said Mr Du Plessis.

People who want to contribute in any way, be it a donation or just helping with your time and energy, can phone Mr Du Plessis on 061 731 3581.
