EVANDER – The local police held a rural safety meeting on 6 September to discuss safety strategies and crime combatting on farms in the Evander district.

Theft of fence droppers and stock are huge problems.

Sgt Thesigan Naidoo, rural safety coordinator, said plans to deal with the theft in the area include being more visible by having regular patrols.

He urged the public, farmers and businesses in the area to be forthcoming with information that could assist the police with the investigation of crime in the farming community.

Sgt Naidoo commended Mr Alf Byleveldt of Jelani Security for providing firefighting services to farmers and for helping with patrols in the rural area.

Anyone in need of assistance can phone Mr Byleveldt at 082 626 2217.

Col Jenny Alberts, station commander, said the police also want to educate the farming community on crime prevention, safety awareness and what to do and not to do on a crime scene.

Mr Jan du Plessis from AfriForum said his organisation is also willing to assist farmers with training and support.
