Stay alert to help prevent sexual assault

As schools open for the first semester of the New Year, as students prepare for college and explore new relationships in their lives, it’s important to always be cautious and stay alert and aware of one’s surroundings.

Assault can happen to anyone, woman, man or child. It is never the victim’s fault. It is wise to always be alert and smart if you are ever faced with this situation.

For those entering a new school or campus, alcohol is definitely a factor in almost all sexual assaults on college campuses. They can take place on a date or at a party. Do not be so trusting and always keep your guard up when meeting people for the first time.

According to a website by Students’ Centre of Health, you can follow these tips for partying smart:

  1. Stick with your friends. Don’t stray from your group
  2. Never leave your drink unattended. Even when you need to go to the bathroom, hold on to your drink. Drinks are easily spiked and is one of the leading reasons people are easily sexually assaulted.
  3. Don’t share drinks either or accept a drink from anyone even if they offer to buy you one.
  4. Avoid clubs or parties that charge men but let women enter and drink for free.
  5. Always keep your cell phone charged and on you at all times
  6. Trust your instincts and go with your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, leave and get to a safe place immediately.
  7. Always carry enough cash on you for a taxi home.
  8. Stay in control and do not over drink or engage in other activities that will distract you.

Lastly, always seek medical attention if you were sexually assaulted. During school hours, always report it to a nurse or seek other help after school hours from your doctor or psychologist.
