Copper thieves convicted

After receiving a tip-off from an informer about suspects digging copper cable in Bethal next to municipality premises in Kerk Street, the police responded swiftly and found the information positive.

The police officers found three men at the scene and arrested them and seized all the tools that were used in the commission of crime.

The trio appeared in Bethal Magistrate’s Court in several times and were found guilty and were sentenced to prison.

During sentencing, ThaboPaulos Mojela (32) was sentenced 12 months’ imprisonment, Bafana Simon Madonsela (32) to 36 months and Petros Bigboy Skhakhane (30) to 30 months’ imprisonment.

One of the Govan Mbeki law enforcement inspectors, Mr Leonard Tefu, confirmed that the copper cable they were stealing belongef to Govan Mbeki Municipality and emphasised that the cable supplies electricity from Eskom substation to Bethal main substation and should anyone steal it the community will suffer a shortage of electricity.

“Fighting crime is everybody’s responsibility and if one doesn’t report criminal activities to the police, it means that the person is promoting crime in South Africa,” said Const Thomas Mogadime, communication and social crime prevention officer at Bethal SAPS.

He thanked the community for working with the police by reporting criminal activities and urged the public to keep reporting crime at 017 647 9929/30.
