Roads blocked by unknown protesters

Roads were blocked with rocks in the early hours of Tuesday, 18 July.

Govan Mbeki Municipality urged disgruntled locals who want to protest, to follow the right procedure.

This came after the road at the Mandela Section traffic cycle was blocked with rocks in the early hours of 18 July.

It is unknown who blocked the road and the reason for it is also not known.

Mr Bheki Kubheka, head of marketing and branding, said the municipality condemns this behaviour.

“It is people’s legal right to demonstrate, but they should follow the right procedure.”

The road was cleared and no accident was reported.

The blocking of the road coma after the municipality had been in the hot seat over service delivery and the appointment of the municipal manager.

In the first incident, the protesters dumped their appliances at the Secunda municipal offices in protest of power outages in the area.

They demanded to see officials of the Department of Technical Services.

The protesters said they were sick and tired of blaming politicians, while officials are not doing their job.

In another incident, a group of men disrupted a recent council meeting in opposition of the appointment of the municipal manager.

Mr Kubheka said he could not confirm that the blocking of the roads is linked to the recent protests.
