More than 80 learners receive bursaries

Dr Blade Nzimande is proud of the Gert Sibande District academic performance.

The Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, handed over 83 bursaries to students doing courses at various universities and TVET colleges in the country.

This was during the youth Imbizo that was held at the eMbalenhle Stadium on Tuesday, 18 July.

The aim was to discuss issues pertaining to higher education and training as part of the commemoration of Mandela Day.

Dt Nzimande said some good indicators are acknowledged when comparing the Grade 12 results from 2011 to that of 2016 that showed that all seven local municipalities of the Gert Sibande District Municipality have shown significant progress and some even went above the provincial pass rate of 77,1 per cent in 2016.

Dr Nzimande said funding from the Funza Lushaka Bursary Fund for bursaries increased from R13,9-m in 2014 to R30,8 million in 2017.

“During Mandela Day in 2016 we committed to offer bursaries to 83 Grade 12 learners in the Gert Sibande Municipal District.

“We have done so and I am happy to report that 83 learners are currently studying in various fields, mainly in the scarce and critical skills field required for this province’s socio-economic growth.
