Evander Regional Court employee sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for defrauding the department of R552 640

Sarah Maria Masango was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment after she was found guilty in the Evander Regional Court on Thursday, 27 July on fraud and theft charges.

The accused was employed by the Department of Justice and Correctional Development responsible for maintenance payments in Evander.

Masangio gained access to the system by using the password of another official and monthly diverted money to relatives as beneficiaries.

The court manager noticed in 2012 that there was a lot of unclaimed money in the maintenance account and that some of the maintenance beneficiaries did not submit bank accounts to receive maintenance money on the new payment system.

Masango gained access to the money and paid some to her mother, brother and two sisters who were also arrested.

The case was withdrawn against them after Masango pleaded guilty as the one who deposited the money into their accounts.

The case was referred to the Mpumalanga Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in May 2012 for investigation.

Masango was arrested in 2012 after it was found that she defrauded the department of R552 640.

She was charged with 174 counts of fraud and theft.
