Girls told about the dangers of posting nude pictures to boyfriends

An Evander High School learner asks Ms Estelle Swart questions about cancer.

High School Evander girls learned from Ms Tracey Keen-Horak, case manager at the Evander Thuthuzela Care Centre, Ms Nontobeko Mazibuko and Ms Estelle Swart that it is important to report rape and abuse.

Ms Keen-Horak warned them about the danger of using social media to communicate with strangers.

She said young people like to post their pictures on public platforms such as Facebook and once they are published, anyone can look at and comment on them.

Girls were also warned to not nude pictures of themselves to their boyfriends.

“According to the law you are a child until you are 18 years old, so if you are taking a naked photo of yourself, you are manufacturing child pornography. If you send that photo to your boyfriend, he is in possession of child pornography,” said Ms Keen-Horak who further told them it is a criminal offence and they can go to prison for it.

She also warned them that at their age, their boyfriends are not going to be with them forever, so they should refrain from sending them photos.

Learners were encouraged to report rape immediately, to not bath and to take their underwear with them to the police as evidence.

Ms Swart educated learners about the virus Human Papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection.

She said the virus can cause cancer and described it as a silent killer.

She concluded by showing learners how to do self examination to prevent breast cancer.

Community members who would like to support the Thuthuzela Care Centre for rape victims, can contact Ms Swart or Thuthuzela Centre.

Ms Swart urged community members to donate handbags with sanitary towels, soap, wash cloths, towels, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

If possible they can also include underwear.

For donations, contact Ms Swart at 0836527727.
